Running The Coast For A Cure: One Man's Journey For His Niece With Sturge-Weber Syndrome Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 37 ratings

An extraordinary and inspirational journey to make a difference!

In 2014, Al DeCesaris set out on a 1,935-mile solo run from Lubec, Maine to Key Largo, Florida. He ran to bring hope to his 10-year-old niece Jenna who suffers with Sturge-Weber Syndrome, a rare and life-threatening neurological disorder. He ran to create awareness and raise funds for medical research so a cure can be found.

For three consecutive months, he battled the rigors of the road, endured numerous injuries, encountered wild animals, and narrowly escaped getting hit by more than a few reckless drivers. Yet, he also experienced the generosity of strangers, had heart-warming interactions with families affected by this devastating disorder, and came to realize - with purpose, determination, and belief - even the seemingly impossible can be achieved.

Running The Coast For A Cure is one man's journey to make a difference for his niece. Told with humor and warmth, Al candidly captures the adversity he faced and the joy he experienced as he ran close to a marathon a day through 14 states down the East Coast. His journey of love and hope will have you running with him, and leave you inspired.

From the Author

In each of us is the power to make a difference! This isn't just rhetoric. This is something I wholeheartedly believe, something I've observed time and again. So when the cause of Sturge-Weber Syndrome - the rare neurological disorder that afflicts my 10-year-old niece Jenna - was discovered, I knew it was time, my time, to help further the efforts to find a cure.

I was determined to make a difference in Jenna's life and in the lives of all those suffering with this devastating disorder. Thus, on the heels of my 2013 cross-country bike ride, which I chronicled in my book,
Crossing America For A Cure: A Bicycle Journey Of Inspiration And Hope, I began training for a new charity event - a solo athletic endeavor that would have me running close to a marathon a day through 14 states down the entire East Coast.

I suppose I could have come up with something a little less arduous (no doubt, my legs would have appreciated it), but I wanted to do something unique and eye-opening to create as much awareness and raise as much money for Sturge-Weber research as possible. My plan was to run (walk ... and even crawl, if necessary) on average 22 miles a day for three consecutive months from Lubec, Maine to Key Largo, Florida. Picking up each day exactly where I left off the day before, I would cover every mile (every foot actually) down the coast.

Now, it's no secret I've never been much of an athlete. And I didn't have the running experience that would lead one to believe I could accomplish something this ambitious. In fact, even though I planned to run close to a marathon a day, I'd never actually run a marathon. Still, I have something within me that I knew would make this seemingly impossible task achievable - purpose. My purpose is my desire to help my beautiful young niece Jenna live a better life. For her and because of her, I am inspired to fight Sturge-Weber Syndrome on her behalf.

For over a decade, Al DeCesaris has volunteered his time and devoted tremendous effort to fighting Sturge-Weber Syndrome, a rare and devastating neurological disorder that afflicts his niece Jenna. Through innovative charitable events, extraordinary athletic endeavors, and his "For A Cure" books, he has created significant awareness about the disorder and raised critical funds for medical research.

CHARITABLE EVENTS:

Al's crusade began not long after the birth of his niece. Recognizing the importance of raising funds for medical research, he co-organized an annual concert and auction fundraiser called Bands on the Bay. Over its 10-year run, the event raised over one million dollars for the Kennedy Krieger Institute and helped fund research that led to the ground-breaking discovery of the cause of Sturge-Weber Syndrome.

ATHLETIC ENDEAVORS:

Even with the success of Bands on the Bay, Al couldn't help but think there was more they could do to further the efforts to find a cure. More he could do.

In 2013, he set out on a solo coast-to-coast bike ride in honor of Jenna. Pedaling on average 75 miles per day, he rode from Santa Monica, California through 14 states and over 3,000 miles before completing his remarkable Crossing America For A Cure bicycle journey in Ocean City, Maryland.

The following year he took on another challenging endeavor, this time on foot. Without a support team and with no marathon experience, Al covered on average 22.5 miles per day for three consecutive months during his Running The Coast For A Cure charity run, which took him from Lubec, Maine down the entire East Coast to Key Largo, Florida - 1,935 miles in all!

In 2017, Al returned to the road for an exciting endeavor which had him hiking the historic Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) across Spain to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela before reaching his final destination of Cape Finisterre overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Each day of his 31-day, 555-mile Hiking Camino de Santiago For A Cure journey of hope was dedicated to a different person living with Sturge-Weber Syndrome.

Through his extraordinary athletic endeavors, Al has created awareness about Sturge-Weber Syndrome in both the United States and Spain, raised critical funds for medical research, and brought hope to his niece Jenna and countless others living with this devastating disorder.

BOOKS:

During and after his charity ride and run, Al wrote about his experiences on the road: the things he saw, the emotions he felt, the challenges he faced and of the extraordinary people he met along the way. His books, Crossing America For A Cure: A Bicycle Journey Of Inspiration And Hope and Running The Coast For A Cure: One Man's Journey For His Niece With Sturge-Weber Syndrome, are honest, entertaining and, above all, inspirational.

To further the efforts to find a cure for Sturge-Weber Syndrome, Al is dedicating all profits from the sale of his "For A Cure" books to medical research. The books are available in Kindle and paperback on Amazon.

TALKS:

Al is a public speaker who is extremely passionate about the charitable work he's involved in and is always willing to share his story of advocacy and service with others. Using his extraordinary athletic endeavors as examples, Al delivers an uplifting message of inspiration and hope, and demonstrates how we all have the power to make a difference through charitable work. His audiences are motivated and empowered to find their purpose, go the distance for those in need, and create positive change in the world!

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. I also share in Al's goal of finding a cure and or better treatments for Sturge Weber Syndrome; my granddaughter Lola was diagnosed at birth 11 years ago. This book chronicles the journey of Al running from Maine to Key Largo (who can physically actually do that!). We were blessed to hang out with Al for 4 or 5 days as he ran through our area of Florida. He would hobble into the house after running yet another daily marathon and then get up in the morning and do it all over again. Simply amazing!

Al does a great job in Running The Coast in sharing those times that were both exhilarating and those that were both physically and emotionally draining. To me what it showed most is his commitment to his Niece and helping her have a better life. Al is a one of a kind person and this is a one of a kind must read book! Great job Al!

It's hard to believe you tackled this unbelievable journey alone. Al, what a roller coaster you had me on from the very beginning. Once I started the book, I couldn't put it down. You painted such a clear picture of everything you went through on a day to day basis that I felt I was there. Can't believe what you overcame during this journey in the name of spreading the word about Sturge-Weber Syndrome. You're truly an inspiration to us all. You're a great author, but an even better man.

Al DeCesaris is an author, speaker, and advocate for people with Sturge-Weber Syndrome. His journey included running from the top of Maine to the bottom of Florida. I really loved how I got to see this guy persevere through each day of running, despite some of the challenges he faced. I also really liked how when he was talking about his challenges he remembered to think about what kinds of hardships people with Sturge-Weber encounter. The one thing that would stop me from reading another one of his books would be that some parts seemed very repetitive and boring. Overall, I thought this book was very inspiring and gave me the encouragement I need so I can go and help be a part of trying to find a cure for Sturge-Weber.

This inspirational journal of hope, pain, and accomplishment during a 1,935 mile run of the east coast meticulously describes what was endured by the author to raise awareness for Sturge Webber Syndrome, a condition that his niece battles daily. Detail about the sites and people encountered when crossing 14 states on foot keeps you anxiously awaiting to hear what the next steps would bring, and how the love of his niece was the most valuable fuel needed to achieve this most difficult mission!
